Long Cane Programme

Our Orientation & Mobility programme supports our Guide Dogs owners and Guide Dog applicants maintain the skills needed to remain independent and mobile.

Our Long Cane or Orientation & Mobility Programme is tailored to meet the needs of each individual with a strong emphasis on safety, confidence building and promoting independent travel.

The course involves daily one-on-one instruction. Learning to use a long cane is an effective way to get out and about safely and independently. We train people from the age of 16 and there is no upper limit.

During the course our Mobility Instructor Kim will show you how to utilise a long cane in everyday practical situations, and will teach you the orientation and mobility skills required to travel safely and efficiently at home, school, work, and in the community.

The course is followed by a visit to your home by the Mobility Instructor who will ensure that you have mastered the use of the long cane and are able to move independently in your environment.
