York

Meet York, a 1-year-old male labrador who loves walks, carrots, cuddles and training exercises. He unfortunately had to be withdrawn from our Puppy Raising Programme prior to entering formal training due to environmental allergies so would need specialised medication to keep these allergies in check.

  • Yellow Labrador
  • Male
  • DOB: 04/01/2024

Due to his age, size and typical Labrador energy levels, York would be best suited to a family with older children or adults. Experience with large dogs would be beneficial.

York is clean in the home and will ask to go outside should he need to toilet.

York loves cheese, CARROTs and cucumbers; however, these should be given as treats as, due to his allergies, these could cause an upset tummy if given excessively.

York can be distracted by dogs but, because he is an engaged and enthusiastic dog, this can be managed with consistent training.

York loves exploring the world with his nose, but because of his size, this can lead to some very strong pulling for him to access what he wants to sniff. We would encourage that the handler be capable of handling a large, strong dog.

His Puppy Raiser advises, ‘While he is quite good with the cue ‘leave it’ and ‘thank you’ it happens that he finds something extremely interesting (and most likely disgusting for human taste). Thankfully he tends to chew on things a bit longer and not swallow them immediately, so there is a window for trying to take things out of his mouth. The best-case scenario is of course swapping with the cue ‘thank you’ but we don’t live in a perfect world, and he is a labrador retriever after all. Important: do not chase him. He will think it’s a game and he is faster than you’d think. Try running away to the opposite direction while making interesting sounds and when he follows you try to offer a high value treat. I always keep some high value treats in his pouch for this reason.”

York has been diagnosed with environmental Atopic Dermatitis which is managed with specialised medication.

Before applying to rehome York, please consider if you are willing to cover the costs associated with his care.

Apoquel would need to be acquired from the vet, current dosage is 1 tablet a day. 30 tablets are approximately €125 with a repeat prescription.

 Application Deadline: 14 March 2025
